Gunmetal Matte nails

Squoval · Matte

Easy at home

Gunmetal taken down to a flat matte, which deepens the colour and kills every reflection.

3 bottles: Gunmetal, Soft Cobalt and Graphite. Gunmetal and Soft Cobalt sit a comfortable distance apart: the motif is clearly legible without shouting, which is the easiest range to freehand in. The bottles are not all the same finish (chrome and crème), so the pattern picks up light differently from the ground.

On a squoval the design has real width to work across, and the rounded corners are what stop the straight walls catching on things.

How to paint Gunmetal Matte nails

  1. 1 Buff, dehydrate and base coat, then cure. Two coats of Gunmetal, floated on so the particles stay lying flat, and cure hard.
  2. 2 Two thin coats of Gunmetal, cured, keeping the surface as level as you can — matte hides nothing.
  3. 3 Matte top coat, cured — and no cuticle oil over it, which spots the finish.

Questions about Gunmetal Matte

  • Is Gunmetal Matte hard to do at home?

Yes. There is no freehand work that has to be accurate. Budget about 30 minutes for a full set, and three colours means three chances for something to bleed, so cure between each one rather than working wet on wet.

  • What polish do I need for Gunmetal Matte?

3 bottles: Gunmetal (chrome), Soft Cobalt (crème) and Graphite (crème). Plus a base coat and a gloss top coat, which every design here assumes you already have.

  • Does Gunmetal Matte work on short nails?

A squoval works short: you lose canvas width rather than length, so the motif just sits closer together.

  • Do I need a UV lamp for Gunmetal Matte?

Yes. Gunmetal only works as a gel — the effect depends on rubbing or setting the finish into a cured tacky layer, which air-dry polish never gives you.
